Indeed, they appear to have very little in common: their mathematical structures are incompatible. And yet this cannot be the whole story. We know that spacetime reacts to the matter within it. We also know that matter at the subatomic scale behaves according to the rules of quantum mechanics, which must surely in turn affect the behaviour of spacetime.
