Loop quantum gravity contrasts dramatically with string theory, which predicts that, just as the three forces covered by the Standard Model (electromagnetism and the strong and weak nuclear forces) are in fact quantum fields manifested as force-carrying particles, so too is the gravitational field mediated by a quantum particle of gravity: the graviton, a massless state of a string.
