This idea goes back to work by the German theoretical physicist Theodor Kaluza, who noticed, just after the end of the First World War, that if he solved Einstein’s field equations of general relativity in five-dimensional spacetime instead of four, then electromagnetism emerged out of the mathematics as vibrations in this fifth, unseen, dimension.
