Despite Kaluza-Klein theory not leading to a unification of gravity and electromagnetism, it did help researchers understand the relevance of the higher dimensions in superstring theory. However, now, instead of just one hidden spatial dimension, there needed to be six, all rolled up into an impossible-to-visualise six-dimensional ball. Superstring theory thus states that there are ten dimensions: four of spacetime that we experience plus the six hidden dimensions.
