The problem that emerged by the 1990s was that it appeared there were five different versions of string theory, and no one knew which one was the correct one. So a new, even grander framework was proposed which unified all five versions under one umbrella. This all-encompassing framework is now called M-theory, which is a supersymmetric theory with eleven, rather than ten, dimensions.
