One of the most haunting stories he tells involves a legislator who has to decide the fate of his adulterous son. Out of respect for the father, the community wants to spare the son a gruesome punishment—blinding in both eyes—but dad refuses to accept the charity. Instead, he gouges out one of his own eyes and one of his son’s, achieving an “admirable balance … between compassionate father and just lawgiver.”3 Justice seems to get much of its power from this kind of equipoise.
