“You may hate me,” I said, my voice quiet and detached as I stared at him with loathing. “But I can guarantee you this: I hate you more.”
Shane grinned in response. “There was a time when you thought she was impossibly hot.”
“Well, I sure hope you’re not looking at me to be your dancing partner.” There was a slim chance in hell of that happening. She scoffed and shook her head. “Of course not,” she replied, making my stomach dip uncomfortably. I didn’t want to dance with her, but I didn’t like the way she’d so happily rejected me either.
I didn’t give her the opportunity to object again, and without any hesitation I moved forward and threw her over my shoulder.
I didn’t like the way guys were staring at her as she danced, and since Shane wasn’t around, I was the only one who could put a stop to it.
“So, this is Ally,”
“She’s just as pretty as you said,” Bart continued. Chase’s cheeks were definitely flushing pink, and I couldn’t help but feel a sense of shock running through me. He’d told his grandpa I was pretty? I was surprised he’d mentioned me at all, but I couldn’t believe he actually complimented me.
Chase stopped by the passenger door and opened it for me, but I hesitated to get in.
He slowly reached out and touched my face, his fingers barely skimming across the skin on my cheek.
think you’re always going to drive me crazy, Ally,” he murmured. “But I think I’m starting to like it.” He pulled his hand back.
When my eyes fell on Ally’s lips, all I wanted to do was kiss her, but right now, I wasn’t sure I wanted to kiss her when she wasn’t acting like herself.
“Tell me you don’t feel anything for me,” I begged one last time. “I can’t do that,” he said before his lips descended on mine.
“What does pink stand for?” he asked. “Anything that can’t be missed.”
The door opened, and before I had a chance to look at Chase, he grabbed hold of my wrist and pulled me into the room. As soon as the door shut behind me, we were kissing. The kiss was hot and desperate, like Chase couldn’t get enough of me, like I was the key to forgetting his problems.
“In fact, it was the exact opposite. He didn’t deserve you, and I liked you so much that I couldn’t stand to see you with him.”
“I didn’t have a choice, Ally, because if I didn’t hate you, I would love you, and loving you would only break my heart.”
“Can’t you see this is all too much?” I said. “I just wanted someone to hook up with, and who better than a well-known player like Chase Williams. Instead, here you are spouting crap about love.”
“Chase, you don’t want to join book club.” “Of course, I do.” “Why?” “Because I want to do anything you’re doing.”
“And I do love you. I love you because the things that have happened between us were real, because we are what happens when things don’t go to plan.” He closed the distance between us once more until our bodies were but a breath apart. “And because I miss every damn thing about you, including every little thing I thought I hated. You are the most stubborn, most annoying pain in the ass I’ve ever known, but you’re my pain in the ass, and I’m not letting you throw us away.”
“It doesn’t matter how much we love each other. My dad will never let me date you.” He grinned at my words. “So, you do love me.”
I moved closer as I went to inspect it. He’d left a lot of the bullet points alone but had really fleshed out the ones under “Step Three: Relationship.” I laughed as I read his first addition. “Always let Ally get her way, unless she’s being an idiot.” It wasn’t the worst piece of advice. He’d also added: “Tell her she’s beautiful and you love her every day” and “Never forget that she’s the best thing that ever happened to you.” His words wrapped me in warmth, and I felt my heart expanding as I took them in. The part I really couldn’t take my eyes away from though was where he’d crossed out
