“I’m going to haunt her from the grave,” Matthew threatens. I look at Karrie. “Don’t worry about that. We are going to sage the house.”
“I’m going to make that woman mine,” I say to the universe and to whoever else is willing to listen to me. “She just doesn’t know it yet.”
“I think I caught something from the kids. I’m going to check my temperature right now,” I say as I go into the bathroom and get the thermometer. “Maybe I caught the bug.” “Yeah, the love bug,” she says, laughing, and I roll my eyes. “Can you be serious for a minute? I might be dying. Maybe I have a tumor,” I say.
“After four kids, you are asking me how? Matthew isn’t doing something right.”
“You closed down the aquarium for us to have dinner here?”
“Are you crazy?” she shrieks, and all I can do is look at her. “You sent me a pet.”
“You sent me a pet,” she says. “A pet that I need to feed and make sure that it doesn’t die.” “It was supposed to be cute,” I say, trying to hide my amusement. “If you want to be cute, send me a pair of shoes!” she yells. “A purse.”
“I’m not wearing anything under this,” she says, and I tilt my head. “Well, I’m wearing my bra and panties.”
“Are you telling me that you walked here naked to return a fishbowl to me?” I ask her, putting my hands in my hair. “You sent me a pet. A pet.” She points at me, and I take her finger now and pull her into my house, picking up the fishbowl and putting it on the table. “I think it’s even dead.”
“I’m making Coq au vin,” she says, and I laugh. “Is that where you suck my cock with wine?” I ask her, and now she laughs.
“A ball stuck in my vagina?” I shriek, and she lifts her hands. “What the fuck was I supposed to tell him?” she shouts. “I have no idea, but you couldn’t be like she thinks she broke her foot?” I put my hand on my forehead.
“But nothing!” he shouts. “If you love her the way you say you do, you don’t just walk away from that. It’s a once-in-a-lifetime thing, Markos. If this is the woman who you want to do all that with, you don’t just let her walk away.”
“Vivienne Paradis,” I say to the universe, “I hope you’re ready because nothing is going to stop me from making you mine.” I say the words out loud, and I’m smiling now. “Let the games begin.”
“Dabble, my ass,” Karrie says under her breath. “How many dabbles have you had?” She looks over at me, and then Zara calls us.
“I will pay you money if you never say unlubricated sex again for the rest of my life,” Chris says to her and then looks at my father. “Do something, please.”
“I forgot the fucking fish.”
“I am not checking your vagina!” she shrieks, holding her hands up to block her eyesight. “Jesus, can you cover it?” “I would do it for you,” I tell her, and then she shakes her head. Finally entering, she goes straight for the television and turns it off right before the woman has a squirting orgasm.
“I’m going to give you less than a second to get your fucking hands off her before I put you through a wall,”
“It’s been two months since I’ve felt your kiss, and I haven’t gone ten minutes without thinking about you.”
“I love you,” she says. “Like love, love you. Like my world would shatter without you.”
“Are you done?” I ask her, not wanting to cut her off but not wanting another minute to go on where she thinks I’m judging her. “I want you to know before anything and above everything, I will never judge you.” Her eyes open a bit more. “I love you.”
“I knew you loved me. You were just scared.” She nods her head. “You can’t just walk away from me, Vivienne, because I’d follow you,” I tell her. “I’d follow you wherever you go. As long as I’m with you, everything is okay.” I smile. “I was ending it tonight, too.” Her mouth opens. “I was done giving you space. I was done with the games and showing you I loved you.
I was done not waking up with you or going to bed with you. I was done with not telling you.”
“You haven’t been paying attention,” I tell her, and she looks at me. “I’ve been making love to you this whole time. Every single time I slid into you, I was making love to you.”
“What in the fuck is that?” Matthew is the first one to ask, then looks at Karrie. I smile; the secret’s finally out. Karrie shrugs her shoulder. “I don’t think she’s thirsty anymore,” she says, and just like that, everyone starts to laugh.
