But direct second- or first-person I-Thou or I-I encounters with the Numinous? Generally frowned upon, or outright persecuted as heresy. Illumined certainty and orthodox authority have often been at odds. Few powerful priests have been willing to get upstaged by hair-on-fire mystics.
