There's a difference between doing your work the best you can and doing it better than someone else purposefully. If you do it the best you can, you would probably think it is better than someone else's. You should even be allowed to look at at their work and improve what you like and what you don't in your own, and you will be doing it the best you can, and you will be satisfied. Being your purpose the end product or having given all your effort, or a mix of both. But if you try to improve your fellow's work for a reason different to getting the best possible product, like selling more or being applauded, you will never be fully satisfied, even if you sell more or are applauded.
