Amid the swell of coverage on the murders, no one seemed to mind the lawyers’ leaking. In a passing remark to the Los Angeles Times on the day before Atkins’s grand jury testimony, Caballero more or less admitted that he wasn’t acting in his client’s best interest, saying he was “gambling that her voluntary testimony might save her from the gas chamber”—“gambling” and “might” being the operative words.28
