At first, they were called rocket scientists by those who assumed rocketry was the most advanced branch of science, says Emanuel Derman, who received a PhD in theoretical physics at Columbia University before joining a Wall Street firm. Over time, these specialists became known as quants, short for specialists in quantitative finance.
