The thing about flying on a pegasus during the daytime is that if you’re not careful, you can cause a serious traffic accident on the Long Island Expressway.

She turned to the homeless guy, but he was gone. The trash can in front of us was cold and empty, as if he’d taken the flames with him.
“Look at Helen and Paris. Did they let anything come between them?” “Didn’t they start the Trojan War and get thousands of people killed?” “Pfft. That’s not the point. Follow your heart.”
She picked up the little god statue and pressed it into my hand. “If anything happens, give that to Nico. Tell him…tell him I’m sorry.”
“Dragons chew eucalyptus leaves?” “Believe me,” Zoë said, “if you had dragon breath, you would chew eucalyptus too.”
Her blond hair was now streaked with gray.
“You did well,” she said. “For a man.” I wanted to protest. But then I realized it was the first time she hadn’t called me a boy.
“Thalia,” Artemis said. “Daughter of Zeus. Will you join the Hunt?”
“You promised you would protect her,” Nico said.
It was a statue of Hades, Lord of the Dead.
