“Don’t you reckon you’ve got enough problems right here and now without trying to bring up ones from the past as well?” I asked him. I mean, if that was his way of coping with the panic, fair enough. It didn’t make much sense to me, though.
In my experience, stuff not looking dangerous and not actually being dangerous were two very different, potentially deadly things.
Beside me, the detective stopped walking. I wondered why, until I realised that I’d stopped walking, and that I still had him by the hand. Good, good. I was doing a good job as protector.
“I can’t—if they’re not trying to hurt us, I can’t—” “Yeah, I know,” I said. “But I bet they’re gunna try to hurt us.” “How do you know?” “We’re Between. Everything here wants to kill or maim humans. It’s like a cultural thing.”
“What are they saying?” “I don’t speak the language,” I objected. “I just wander in every now and then and get out before someone tries to kill me.”
Long story—nearly turned into a lycanthrope, had to swallow some vampire spit—don’t worry about it. Important thing was, I still had my vampire reflexes!
Someone was groaning like they were dying; probably me.
We were on a wide, pebbled path bordered by ivy-clad statues and manicured bushes; safe, sunshiny, and nothing deadly within reach of us. Flamin’ suspicious.
I mean, JinYeong is an annoying little git, but he’s our annoying little git, and no one should be allowed to bother him except us.
If it only depends on your point of view, what’s actually the truth?
“Allow me to remind you that Lord Sero’s fate is to sit on the throne of Faery as Lord of Behind. An Heirling is a direct challenge to that claim. He would be a fool to allow such a human to live, Pet or otherwise.”
An Heirling is any fae, or mix of fae and another race who is powerful enough to challenge the current rule and take control of the world Behind.”
It doesn’t matter how well you’re hidden; someone will always see you. Make sure that it doesn’t matter when you are seen.
“Hang on, vampires can love people?” I demanded. Skinny, nose-in-the-air JinYeong in love with someone? “Rubbish! JinYeong’s too much in love with himself to fall in love with anyone else!”
“You want more tea?” “I would like to point out that not all problems can be solved by tea,” said Athelas. “And yet, at the risk of undermining that, yes, I would.”
“He said,” murmured Athelas, “that although you dislike the scent now, in time you will come to associate it with him. He says that one day you will find yourself smiling, although you don’t know why, because you smelled this scent and involuntarily thought of him.”
