President John F. Kennedy announced on May 25, 1961, before a joint session of Congress that the United States had the goal of sending an American to the moon and returning him safely back to Earth by the end of the decade.4 The catalyzing speech, corresponding resource commitments, and focused R&D could not have occurred without Kennedy’s leadership at this critical moment in history.
