For a moment in the rain, Charlotte felt a wave of gratitude for her overweight, thoughtful daughter.

Is this pertinent to the story or just establishing Charlotte’s character as very appearance based (which you could feel in the first 5% already)

But strangers seeing you as someone you couldn’t bear to be was simply one of the indignities of age.
