Mussolini and his associates had been executed, not in Piazzale Loreto but in front of Villa Belmonte in the hamlet of Mezzegra in the hills above Lake Como. Their bodies had been brought to Milan to avenge a particularly gruesome killing of Italian partisans on that spot some eight months earlier.
