That’s what a kiss is. It’s more than just lips. It’s everything. I—” “Everything,” I murmur, and put my mouth to hers again before she can stall. I like the thought of everything.
It might be many turns of the moons before my khui wakes, if it ever does. Until then…I want Devi. And I do not care if that is wrong.
“We can’t,” she says softly. “Tell me why.” I pull her hand to my face, rub her palm against my cheek, then press my mouth to her soft skin. “Tell me why we cannot touch, Devi.” “Because if you resonate to someone else after we’re together, it’ll break me,”
“But I would rather have you for one day than regret it for all of them.”
I know in this moment that no matter what happens, Devi is mine. I will tear my khui from my chest if it dares to resonate to another.
“I think of nothing but you, Devi. Nothing but your face and your smile. Your cleverness. I think of touching you all day long, and I have waited an eternity for the suns to set so I can have you in my arms again.” His fingers strum over the back of my hand. “There is no time to think of my khui because my thoughts are full of Devi.”
I do not feel as bad when I take his arm again. It does not mean that I am weak and useless, it just means that in this moment, I need the strength of my tribe to help me.
