Vi searched his expression as he effortlessly held her gaze. “You’re not the same woman I first met.” “No one stays the same,” Vi murmured.
People I love… Love… She loved him. Her heart felt like it had just shattered into a thousand pieces only to have them all start beating in unison—a chorus that sang for Taavin alone.
“Maybe we’re meant to hurt and be hurt. Maybe we’re just meant to burn.”
“Fine,” he breathed. “If we’re meant to burn, then we burn together.”
“Perhaps you’re right about us burning together, because only you can set me on fire.”
“I need you to accept that this, however perfect it can feel, isn’t. I want you to stay with me despite that fact. Stay with me because it is messy, and raw, and something we need but may also be terrified to want.”
“Good sense would have me give up on you… But when it comes to you, Vi, I seem to be lacking in good sense.”
“Why have you been so nice to me?” Vi interrupted. “You hardly know me.” “Do I have to know someone to be kind to them?” “Too much kindness… too much trust… It will get you hurt, or killed,” Vi muttered bitterly. “The opposite is also true—but it’ll be a much lonelier death.”
“Everything.” There was no hesitation. No holding back. “She is everything.”
She loved him. And he loved her… despite both of them knowing better. Despite neither being brave enough to say it in such plain terms. Those facts made no difference in the end. They had fallen in love despite themselves. They just had yet to be brave enough to say it aloud.
“Today seems as good a day to die as any other.”
You should never underestimate a Solaris… least of all my daughter.
Their lives—their love, however unspoken it was—seemed so insignificant in the face of the needs of the whole world. No wonder neither of them could bring themselves to say it aloud.
“Daughter, you are of her blood, as you are of mine, as you are of your mother’s. You don’t need proof in magic or tokens. You don’t need the world to validate it. It’s here.” He tapped her breastbone under her collarbone and above her heart. “It’s in the woman who’s sailed across the world and risked her life to reunite that family.”
“Keep that head high,” he dared to utter. “Even if you wear a crown of filth, you are still a princess of Solaris.”
“Call me a monster and I’ll show you my fangs.”
“Fate is a road that is made, laid by the generations before us.”
She was the fire of her forefathers. She was the bitter ice that had hardened her. She was the frozen flames of the Goddess herself embodied in crystal: hard, unmoving, unfeeling.
“Hate me because I will never let myself love you again. Hate me because you truly are the cause of all my torment. You are my nightmares. It was always you.”
“The only world that exists now, is the one we exist within. I am the fount of life and time. There is no other world.”
