“It’s not really a question of missing them, or of wanting to go. Sometimes life changes you, and the people you used to know aren’t as comfortable of a fit as they used to be. And people you thought you’d never want to be near turn out to feel like family.”
If you find court to be lonesome, remember that once even we were strangers to you, and you are undoubtedly surrounded by future friends.
“The forest fed your fear so that you would run away, because it knows your fears can overcome almost everything else. But love can overpower things too, as can the truth that we are not hopeless or alone. Breathe deeply. Look at each other.”
“Those emotions aren’t the full truth about you, but it’s easier to recognize that about someone else. These friends around you—you’d banish their fears if you could. You’d convince them that the truth of who they are is so much vaster.” Alaric rubbed at his face and looked around the group. “As clearly as you know that about them”—Will caught Sini’s eye—“remember the same about yourselves. If you can’t hear your own voice telling you that your fears do not define you, then believe the words your friends would speak.”
The needs before her trumped any relief she could seek for herself.
The day is shaped not by the violence of the storm, but by the fall of the light and the voice of the rain.
