Although 10–30 per cent of all UK patients going to see their doctor for any reason report substantial fatigue lasting for more than a few weeks (15–27 per cent in the US), studies have indicated that a diagnosis of chronic fatigue syndrome is made in only a small minority of these cases. CFS appears to be more common in women than men. A variety of explanations have been put forward for this, in particular changes in the role of women, with increased demands and expectations.
