Don’t let her read your pages, Landon. She couldn’t have even handled my prologue.
wanted to know his story. His ugly, hard novel. I wanted to read his words, even though they seemed to bleed across the page in the most painful way.
When someone saw your pain and didn’t look away, it felt like a gift, like they were allowing you to be exactly who you were without shame or judgments.
Why can’t I read you, Chick?” “I don’t know,” she said, offering a quick shrug before she continued eating, “I’m probably above your reading level.”
I think I was born with a hole in my heart. It doesn’t beat like it’s supposed to, and I don’t know if that makes it unworthy of love. What kind of person would want to love a broken heart? What kind of person would take the time to listen to the heartbeats of something so damaged? I just hope broken hearts can receive love, too. I think us broken hearts need love the most.
Sometimes, sitting in silence with someone who is willing to stay with you helps a heart heal more than talking about one’s hurts.
My eyes watered over at her words, and I shut them so the emotion wouldn’t fall down my cheeks.
a promise from a former liar was the hardest truth to believe.
“We’re not perfect. We have struggles, too. Really hard struggles.” “Yeah, I get that. It’s human to struggle, but you all struggle together…as one.”
I wondered what the storm inside her head looked like. I wondered if her thunder rumbled as loud as mine, if her lightning struck her soul repeatedly, if she drowned in her own thoughts.
It turned out everyone in the world had scars. Everyone had cracks and cuts that bled into their soul each night. Some people were simply better at hiding them.
Lead with your heart, but take your brain with you.”
Who knew a heart could skip for the Devil himself?
Who knew forehead kisses could both heal and hurt?
“The people who show the least emotions are normally the ones who hurt the most,”
“You’re not an asshole, Landon,” I yawned again, “You’re a like a teddy bear hiding in a grizzly bear outfit.”
“A penny for your thoughts,” I whispered. “A nickel for your time…a quarter for your heart…” I inhaled deeply. “A dollar to make you mine.”
