Resuscitating our culture afterward wasn’t easy. My approach was to admit all the sins of the past and reset us with a new level of transparency in the most memorable setting I could afford, which wasn’t much. I scheduled an all-company off-site in Santa Cruz, California, and rented rooms in the Dream Inn, a motel. The catered meals were ham-salad sandwiches with drink coupons. I made everyone double up in the rooms, ostensibly to save even more money.
