The way we receive forgiveness is by repenting. To repent means to (1) say that we are sorry—and sorry, as I have put it in Flourishing, “not that we have been caught, sorry not merely that the other person has been wronged, but sorry that we have committed the wrongdoing”104—to (2) actually be sorry, and to (3) commit ourselves to act otherwise in the future.
