When applying to college, Berlekamp had two requirements: world-class academics and a weak sports program. He had decided that sports was overemphasized in society, and he was no longer going to pretend to care. The Massachusetts Institute of Technology became an obvious choice. “When I heard MIT didn’t have a football team, I knew it was the school for me,” he says.
