By their very nature, false dichotomies are antithetical to rational discourse, fostering extremism. The inherent polarisation of a false dilemma can poison pragmatic solutions and dash constructive dialogue. Its deep intrinsic appeal lies in its ability to compress an entire spectrum down to simple, mutually opposed extremes, explaining its long-standing appeal to despots and demagogues.
