Our Lord set the example par excellence in rebuffing Satan’s temptations with three precise quotations from the Old Testament Scriptures (cf. Matt. 4:1–11). The psalmist said, “How can a young man keep his way pure? By guarding it according to your word” (Ps. 119:9), and, “I have stored up your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you” (v. 11).
