He means that when you fall asleep at night, you’re bereft of the night sounds you’ve clung to for years, whether they’re sirens or cicadas or the television in your neighbor’s apartment, and when you wake up, your body has forgotten the oceans you’ve crossed and the roads you’ve driven and it still thinks it’s home.
Any of us can be anything. All of us can be all things.
