We also asked subjects for three words to describe what they would most like to feel at work. “Happy” was the number one choice. That came as no surprise—in all my work with various groups, whenever I ask how people would like to feel, the first word out of everyone’s mouth is “happy.” It’s like the default choice, the one that we blurt without much thought. But it was the number two and three choices that were most revealing.
