December 2018 brings new revelations about Trump’s other major military entanglement with Saudi and Emirati interests: the civil war in Yemen, where the Saudis and Emiratis have been staging a violent intervention since March 2015. Beginning in 2015, heavy U.S. tankers have been assisting the two Gulf nations by offering midair refueling of their warplanes. On December 8, the Atlantic reveals that while “President Donald Trump repeatedly complains that the United States is paying too much for the defense of its allies, [he] has praised Saudi Arabia for ostensibly taking on Iran in the Yemen war. It turns out, however, that U.S. taxpayers have been footing the bill for a major part of the Saudi-led campaign, possibly to the tune of tens of millions of dollars.”
