My imagination had been spiraling out, but it came to a screeching halt when I saw there was a name in the Plus One column next to Val’s name. She was going to the event with someone.
“Don’t worry. I’ll keep him out of your way so he doesn’t embarrass you.” Wait a second, what? “You will?” April looked like she might hug Val.
The man was unbelievable, but the fact that he’d taken the afternoon off and was here for me disarmed me faster than I would have thought possible.
He chuckled. “Fiery. I can’t wait for my grandson to meet you. He’s quite a fiery personality himself.” I squinted my eyes. Was he trying to set us up? “You’d make a great pair.” Oh my God, he was.
“I don’t want the girls to forget them, Peyton especially. She was a baby when they passed away, and I think that mentioning little facts now and then makes the girls feel as if they knew their mom and dad without making them sad.
Val and I had been dealt similar life blows, only we were at different stages. She had those busy years behind her and was enjoying her freedom, while I would still be in the thick of it for the next ten years.
When had I taken over his apartment? Had I made myself too comfortable? Been too intrusive? Oh, God, I had, hadn’t I? Taking over the girls’ schedule, even getting involved in choosing a nanny.
Why had she taken everything? She couldn’t possibly need them all on her trip. An impossible thought wiggled its way into my mind as fear clawed at my gut. Had she left me?
