We should be able to say, every year, “I am more loving, patient, and kind and experiencing more joy, peace, and self-control than I was last year.” If we can’t say that, then we are not growing.

To pick up the cross daily means to acknowledge every day that we belong to God. We have been purchased by the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ (1 Peter 1:18-19). When we pick up the cross we affirm that our identity is based not in our physical existence but in our relationship with God. We are children of God (1 John 3:1-3). Our life is in Christ, because He is our life (Colossians 3:3-4).
