In 2015, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) determined that there were nearly 45 million non-immigrant admissions to the United States for business or pleasure through air or sea ports of entry who were expected to depart in FY2015. Of this number, DHS calculated a total overstay rate of 1.17 percent, or around half a million individuals.
