If it were wrong for blacks to be discriminated against, then why not women, or homosexuals? But to ask this was not – as King had done – to prick the consciences of Evangelicals, and to remind them of values to which they already held. Instead, it was to attack the very fundamentals of their faith. That a woman’s place was the home and homosexuality an abomination were orthodoxies, so pastors thundered, that had the timeless sanction of the Bible itself.
