To be enlightened was, in turn, to lay claim to a status as the people of God – the laicus. The journalists of Charlie Hebdo, then, were doubly laïc. The tradition in which they stood – of satire, of blasphemy, of desecration – was not a repudiation of Christian history, but its very essence.
