“You gave it all up for her, and now that you’re damned for all eternity…do you really think she’s just going to let you go?”
“It’s funny because omegas bitch that they die for no purpose. They’re always stepped on during the wars. Well, it’s fucking war between monsters. Shit happens. The irony is that you and I may die for no purpose at all, outside of a non-existent war, because when Arion comes in here, there won’t be a wolf left standing. These stupid fucking naïve wolves will likely kill us just to feel like they’ve somehow wounded the alphas they wanted to bait to their own slaughter.”
“Why am I in chains and you’re not?” Shera asks like she’s annoyed, as I begin pacing the room. I immediately pause my pacing and smile over at her. “Because I fainted and you fought.” An agitated expression creases her features. “Guess fainting isn’t such a bad super power after all, is it?” I muse as I glance back out the bars.
“I’m going to need more information, because I’m not sure this is the time to do girly bonding things like swapping clothes,” she says with a matter-of-fact and mildly serious tone.
I shrug a shoulder. “Plan B is to find you somewhere to hide until help comes.”
“So it’s settled. She’s moving in with me, and you all can come see her when you want to,” Arion says like he’s declaring it the new law. “I’m struggling to see how that’s the next thing out of your mouth. Did I miss another conversation you only had in your head?” I ask him.
Damien adds to my back, and I turn to see him saluting Arion with his drink. It’s never good when Damien plays nice with Arion. It’s all fun and games until they finally collide.
“Of course he’s still in love with Idun,” she says distractedly, standing in just her bra and panties, as I tuck one set of threads into my bra. “She’s the only woman he’s ever been with, but he had you spread on that desk like you were his next favorite meal.”
“But you still have to take Arion, Violet, because they are a package deal, whether they realize it or admit it,” she goes on as I continue stuffing my bra.
You’re not rolling downhill, Violet; you’re tangled in their web. You’re already theirs. Arion is a package deal.”
“So glad you’re a genius. Now I feel even more confident in everything you say or do,” Shera whispers like I’m the biggest idiot she’s ever met and she can’t believe she has to die beside me. In her underwear.
The strings come to life, flying out of my bra and swinging me through the crowd like a wanna-be, poor man’s spider-girl in Ghost Buster underwear.
Wrecking Ball pops into my head, and I can almost imagine Anna singing it to me in this moment.
Arion is sitting right beside me, legs crossed at his ankles like he’s been here all along with his hand on my leg, even though I can’t feel his touch.
I still can’t feel Arion’s touch, even as he absently draws circles on my knee, leaned over on me like he’s enjoying the touch I can’t feel and we’ve been watching our favorite show together.
“My vampires are smarter than wolves, but whatevs.
He’s cute when he’s confused. It’s hard to find a guy who looks as good as Vance cute very often.
“When sex is involved, it feels like I’m the only person in the world you want to see, and it feels like you want to be with me. But when sex is over, so is the way you look at me.”
You’re the most frustratingly confusing woman I’ve ever known. I believe this is the truest meaning of mixed signals.”
“That’s sort of the problem. I feel like the conduit for your feelings for them because you have heterosexual body parts with a homosexual mentality. I’m not sure I’m okay with simply being a conduit,”
Unsure how to be right now, since this feels sort of awkward, I think I curtsy. Pretty sure that’s why his eyebrows bounce up. Life would be easier if I knew how to be cool.
“Are you implying that she’s drawn to our more killing natures?” Arion asks with far too much intrigue and hope in his eyes. “She just gave you the ‘let’s be friends’ brush-off, so I’d say it’s highly unlikely that’s the case,” Damien dutifully points out.
“I may not know why you’re mad at me, but I do know we’ll discuss it when you’re not exhausted,” he tells her like it’s a clear warning, and I see the tired relief on her face. Damn it, now Damien looks more thoughtful than I do.
“I don’t know why Damien, Arion, and Emit all seem to want you just as much as I do. I do know why I want you, and among a great many reasons…is the almost adorable fact you wanted to protect me from omega werewolves,” he goes on, less serious and more amused.
I spot a lot of various chocolate things—some ornate and wrapped in clear paper, and some in decorative boxes. “Why—” “I think Damien bought out the chocolate store this time,” Vance dutifully explains, rolling his eyes. I’m still mad at Damien, but his overreactions always sort of make my heart hurt. No one else has ever bought me flowers or chocolate.
“I know you well enough for sex. I don’t know you well enough to follow you into a basket-lowering well where you feed me lotion a few times a day,”
He’s not supposed to be rewarded for my actions, damn it.
“Maybe this is why it only almost worked,” Violet mutters almost too low for me to overhear. Vance resists the urge to smile, like they’re sharing in some inside joke.
My fists unfold when I see her start kissing a trail up his arm with far too much comfort and ease—something she hasn’t really had with him until now. It’s certainly more comfort and ease than she’s had with even me, and I thought I was out in front. Damn it all to hell. Now I sound as stupid as Arion.
“You bugged my fucking house, didn’t you?” Vance asks the vampire the second we hear the door shut up top. Violet’s senses aren’t quite as good as ours. I look over at Arion, idly wondering if he’s that clever. Arion nods like it should have been obvious. “Of course I did. She’s not going to tell us directly what we’ve done wrong. I needed to know, and now I do,” he answers unapologetically. “I really should do a better job of keeping up with technology,” I note aloud to myself.
“I’m sorry,” I tell her very plainly, and loudly enough for them to hear in case she needs proof that I’m not too prideful to apologize in front of— “What’d you do?” she muses, still writing beside the basket that’s interrupting my view. “Doesn’t matter. I’m sincerely fucking sorry, and I hate you being mad at me while you’re clearly falling hard for Vance.”
“Monster parts? Exactly what monster parts are the issue, sweet gypsy?” I ask, my grin growing as her adorable little scowl forms.
“Curious, does that mean she at least finds us attractive? That’s not suddenly the problem?” Arion asks for clarification.
Even with a vampire alpha in her front seat, leading her to something she’ll hate us all for, if not handled delicately, Violet is still doing forty-nine in a fifty.
“Since it’s becoming increasingly apparent you’re never going to come to me on your own, I’ll at least leave your present at the door. It shouldn’t go to waste, and I plan to get you something different on your next birthday,” he states randomly, before abruptly walking out, never even glancing back at me.
She gives me a slow shake of her head. “You don’t realize how protected you are by Arion, but that protection stems as far as his interest in you, Violet. I’m putting him in a bit of jam with this breakup, so I’d appreciate it if you don’t go and fuck things up for me. M’kay?” she asks, a very serious but calm expression on her face.
“Just give me something, because I’ve told you far too much and there should be more balance in our budding friendship,”
He runs a frustrated hand over his face as he leans against the wall, looking like the most beautiful man no matter how mussed he is. It’s an unfair advantage because of the inconvenient distraction it provides time and time again. I really like pretty things, damn it.
“Who the bloody hell is Fiona?”
Tom makes a huff of a sound. “Your mom’s not going to be happy you’re in a polyamory relationship with those four. They killed her family.” I begin massaging my temples. “A what?” Violet asks in an unusually high octave. “Is that not the right word? I looked it up on the world wide web,” Tom says.
“So this is hell. I’m the gossiping wolf toy that’s nice to play with, while the vampire is the forbidden fucking fruit that hangs so low it’s suspicious. It’s absurd,” I angrily tell my very silent omega.
My omegas have figured out something I had to figure out in a much more dramatic, eye-opening way. Not only am I apparently too soft, I’m also stupid once more.
“What’re you doing shirtless?” she asks, looking back over at me. “It’s like ten degrees out here. People are going to think that’s weird.” Damien restrains a smile.
“I’m sure he’ll probably appreciate the shotgun seat more than I will,” I tell Vance, drawing a grin from Arion, as the vampire leans over and kisses the top of my head.
“Ladies and gentlemen, this is your future captain speaking,” Arion’s voice says smoothly over the intercom, causing Emit to roll his eyes and Damien to release a small groan. “It’s apparently a lot quicker to cross the Atlantic in this era, so the trip time will be considerably shorter than it was the last time I personally made it.”
“Men to boys,” I mutter under my breath.
