A simple geopolitical analysis demonstrates that with the end of the Cold War, this attitude has become meaningless. With the demise of the Soviet Union the centrality of Europe in US grand strategy came to an end as well. The US still shares many interests with the EU, but it also has its own geopolitical concerns that are quite different from ours.
