The 2017 Associated Press Stylebook, which is basically the go-to guide for journalists, now recommends that magazines and newspapers ‘avoid words like alcoholic, addict, user and abuser’ and ‘instead choose phrasing like he was addicted, people with heroin addiction or he used drugs’.
