In Greenwich Village in the 1950s, the small businesspeople, the locksmiths, bread bakers, and shoe repairmen—who are there simply to sell goods and services—become a network, carrying civic functions of connecting, protecting, observing, communing. This beautiful “ballet of the street” is what the great urbanist Jane Jacobs loved to celebrate; it’s an instance of an emergent system, right on the sidewalk.
