Some participants were given training specifically in ACT defusion and how it can free us from the grip of unhelpful thoughts and feelings, like cravings. Others were taught to directly challenge their cravings with cognitive restructuring techniques, such as telling themselves, “If I don’t give in to this craving for chocolate, it will eventually fade.” Guess how much more likely those who had been taught defusion were to not eat any chocolates? A whopping 326 percent!
