slate sky
Thunder crackled from afar.
stole a glance at me.
sending off increasingly agitated texts to
car down the bumpy dirt road.
gave me an encouraging nod before I closed the door.
clutched and unclutched
heavily lined face.
stuck her head out the door
cocked her head to the side,
Long thin arms
withdrew, and I stepped over the threshold.
I pointed to the staircase.
creaking stairs,
breath hitched.
bedspread
light tone.
regarded me soberly.
sound of smashing glass exploded
emotional day drains
breathing slowed, and my mind drifted to a numbing darkness.
A sharp rap at the door burst the silence,
shadows trembled in the dusk,
girly bedspread
filled the entrance,
ran a brush through my hair.
Her features relaxed.
I tuned her out.
escaped to my bedroom
mementos for comfort
