scientific naturalists have typically attempted to explain the fine tuning not by positing a known law or process, but instead by positing alternate explanations that attempt to reduce the surprise associated with the discovery of the fine tuning. Both the weak anthropic principle and the strong anthropic principle provide good examples of this strategy. Nevertheless, as we saw in Chapter 8, both of these explanations failed to meet the test of causal adequacy and for compelling reasons of basic logic.
