Certainly, when Draper and White were writing, many scientists perceived a conflict between science and religious belief, but this was not always the case. Instead, almost all historians of science today offer a more nuanced view: they maintain that although some scientists or scientific theories challenged belief in God in some periods of scientific history, in others religious belief actually inspired scientific advance.
