When I explain the concept of the expanding universe to students or in public talks, I often illustrate the concept by blowing up a balloon with spiral galaxies drawn on the surface with a marking pen. As I inflate the balloon, the hand-drawn galaxies on the surface of the balloon get farther and farther away from each other. The galaxies in the universe do the same as the result of the expansion of space itself.
