Sandage described his own internal struggle to reconcile his commitment to a reductionistic and materialistic philosophy of science with his growing convictions that something beyond the strictly material must have played a role in bringing the universe into existence. He explained that although he did not think that scientific evidence could prove God’s existence, he did think that new discoveries in cosmology and physics had lent unexpected credibility and support to theistic belief.61 He continued:
