Eddington showed that the values for the cosmological constant and the curvature of the universe (as well as the mass-energy density of the universe) needed to be perfectly set and maintained. Even the slightest alteration in any of those values would cause the universe to either expand forever or contract back onto itself in a great cosmological “big crunch.”28
