In making this case, I critiqued several nontheistic interpretations of the fine tuning: (1) the weak anthropic principle, (2) the strong anthropic principle,4 (3) explanations based upon natural law, and (4) explanations based upon chance. In the last case, I critiqued only explanations that draw on the probabilistic resources of this universe. As it happens, most scientific materialists themselves now find these four interpretations of the fine tuning intellectually unsatisfying.
