you have the permission to grab hold of the things you’re interested in, that fascinate you, and to dive deeper into them to see where they lead you.
There is a belief among many of these types, that to jump with both feet into something like that is to play hooky from the tangible, important details of life. But I would argue—and have—that these pursuits are the important parts of life. They are so much more than hobbies. They are passions.
help is more than just an extra pair of hands or an extra set of eyes. Help is expertise. It’s wisdom. It’s learning enough to understand and admit to what you don’t know. It’s how you learn to do new things and how you deepen your skill set.
If I can do something in an hour, that a less experienced maker in the shop might take two or three hours to complete, the question I ask myself isn’t, “How can I help them do it faster?” It’s “Why not just jump in and do it myself?” Then I invariably do, and the first question never gets answered.
THIS is exactly what I get at work... "It'll be quicker if I just do it myself"... ah yes but then I will never learn how to do that
I’m a fervent believer that a shop is a holy space wherein we pay attention, like prayer, to those things that are important to us: what we are doing, what we desire to make, how we solve the problems we encounter while tackling a project, and what we can achieve through our efforts.
