Researchers in Hawaii tried putting people on a traditional, pre-SPAM, Hawaiian diet with all the plant foods they could eat.1723 The study subjects lost an average of seventeen pounds in just twenty-one days. Caloric intake dropped by 40 percent, but not because they were eating less food. The subjects lost seventeen pounds in three weeks eating more food, in excess of four pounds of food a day.
