They slapped the handcuffs on Rufus, who had turned pale and wild-eyed. He, Rufus Buckley, former district attorney and symbol of the highest standards of law abidance, morality, and ethical conduct, was being hauled away like a common criminal. Jake fought the urge to applaud.

When the door slammed, everyone gasped for what little oxygen was left in the room. The lawyers began exchanging humorous glances, certain they had just witnessed something they would never see again.
Lol it was definitely entertaining, but i sense it was deliberately done.
Kendrick Bost led Lettie and her people off to a corner where he tried to assure them things were going as planned. Most seemed skeptical.
Ugh I'm not. It was entertaining but also way too easy. They've got a devious scheme up their sleeves.

Mr. Hubbard hired her as a part-time housekeeper three years earlier. How did she hear about the job opening? She did not.
This narrating stuff is driving me up the wall. Just give me the actual DIALOGUE!
Jake asked Lettie if she had ever signed a will. No, she had not. “Have you ever seen a will?” “No sir.”
Now we're narrating AND giving me dialogue? Can't you just drop the narrating?
“Where did you get this copy of the will?” “I kept it.” Actually, it had arrived anonymously in the mail, but who would ever know the difference? “Nothing further,” Jake said as he sat down.
What the heck, Jake?? He didn't even answer your question!
“No. Take it easy. If you pin her down, she’ll just start crying again. The jury’s sick of her.”
That's exactly WHY you need to pin her down! Get them to really hate her.
Jake said, “Who needs a rule book?” “See me after court today, Jake,” Judge Atlee said sternly, then blew some more smoke.
He was playing you the whole time, Jake.
He did not stop by Judge Atlee’s office, as directed. Instead he went home.
Brave. But that's probably gonna bite you in the butt later.
Jake blurted, “So it’s in keeping with the spirit of this trial. A surprise witness here, an ambush there. I thought you understood these tricks, Wade.”
